4 Ways to Keep Your Composite Deck Clean During Winter

When it comes to maintaining your home in the winter, landscaping is the first thing that comes to the mind. Nearly all of us think of trimming, pruning and other tasks. Only a realize how important it is to keep your deck clean. It is a pity.

Keeping your composite deck clean in winter is as important as landscaping. Taking care of your deck during the winter will prepare it for spring cleaning, which will ultimately keep your deck in shape and enable it to last for several years. The benefits are many but many homeowners avoid it because they think it is tough. It is not.

Composite deck cleaning prior to winter does not have to be tough. In this blog, we share with you four ways to keep your deck in top shape during the cold months.

Remove Dirt and Debris at Regular Intervals

Leaves, pine needles, and branches will gather on your deck during winter. Remove them all. You can set up a biweekly cleaning schedule and even consider cutting some branches. Not doing this will cause the dirt to build up and may cause mold to begin growing on the surface of your deck.  It may also obstruct ventilation if too much of it accumulates under the deck.  This may cause water to sit and mold to take hold.  After removing the loose stuff from your deck we recommend a quick rinse using Resist Mist Composite Deck Cleaner.

Eliminate Mildew as Soon as it Appears

Never let mildew grow on your deck. Overlooking the problem can lead to permanent damage. You can use Resist Mist’s Composite Deck Cleaner, mix it with water and spray the solution on to the mildew to remove it. Using home-based methods is not recommended because they do not always work. Also, using a pressure washer for removing mildew can cause lasting damage to your deck; your deck may not be able to bear the pressure you will be applying.

Remove Pots and Planters from the Deck

Setting your pots and planters straight on to your deck’s surface can cause staining. These containers usually have drain holes at their base. It means that some of the water you give to your plants flows out of these holes, comes into contact with your deck and stays there. There are two ways out of this problem. First, set pots in a wide container that is off the deck or use a pot caddy that can be found at any big box store. And second, you can the place where your pots are sitting once in a week with our Composite Deck 32 oz Spot Cleaner.

Use Your Deck in the Winter

You will not be inclined to do any of the activities we have mentioned so far if you are not using your deck. It is completely natural.  So, in order to encourage yourself to take care of your deck, start using it. You can barbecue or simply sit around an outdoor fireplace. Just keep the deck in use. It will prevent snow from accumulating and nudge you every now and then to keep your deck in shape.

Removing dirt, debris, and mildew, cleaning the place below the pots and using your deck are excellent ways to keep your composite deck in a good shape and prolong its life.

3 Reasons to Clean Your Composite Deck Regularly

Just as you shower every day to keep you fresh and hygienic, your composite deck needs periodic cleaning to stay in good shape. Your decks bear a lot. Dirt, pollen, rotten leaves, broken branches, spilled wine, kids dropping their donuts and more. If you do not remove that dirty stuff at regular intervals,  mold and algae will make your deck their home making it unsightly and even shortening the deck’s lifespan. But cleaning your deck does not have to be a huge chore.

Composite deck cleaning is not difficult if you do it systematically and at regular intervals. It can prolong the life of your deck and postpone their replacement, saving you  quite a lot of money. Do not wait until the end of winter to clean your deck. Clean it regularly to increase its life and make it look good and stain-free.

Zen and the Art of Composite Deck Cleaning

No one should think of composite deck cleaning as a chore. It can be a form of meditation and that can turn you into a prosperous, healthy and happy person. Don’t believe me? Read these four ways cleaning your deck will change your life.

1. Prosperity, or its absence, is often at the root of several kinds of dukkha (suffering). Cleaning your deck can keep prosperity on your side. Think about it: How much can you save by not replacing your deck every few years? The figure will be such a huge number over your lifetime that it will make you unhappy. Do not let outside factors control your happiness. Clean your deck to prolong its life. You can save quite a lot, be prosperous and happy.

2. Illnesses are a better bigger cause of dukkha than a lack of wealth. You can always console yourself by devising strategies to earn and be prosperous. But to be in bad health can be truly depressing, especially when you have no control over it. A deck full of dirt is home to many kinds of bacteria. Some of the bacteria can make you unhealthy and sad. Clean your deck to remove the bacteria. You can stay healthy.

3. Aesthetics plays a big role in our lives. Maslow puts an appreciation for beauty to the top of his famous pyramid, suggesting that beauty will make a healthy, prosperous (not filthy rich) person—like most Americans today—happy. A corollary of his theory is that dirt and filth should appall us, which is true. Most of us find a lack of cleanliness disgusting. And if you are one of us, then clean your deck. It will make the surface pretty and you happy.

4. Nature can make you happy. But it is not possible to be in communion with nature in many of America’s large cities; going to wooded areas usually takes many hours of drive. An alternative can be to dine on your deck and watch the sunset. Little things like this can fill you with happiness. But do you think it is possible to dine on a dirty deck? No, it is not. So clean it regularly and relish in the little things nature showers at you to make you happy.

If you want to be happy, prosperous and healthy, do not ask if but how to clean your composite deck.

How to Clean Your Composite Deck Safely and Quickly?

Composite decks have become very popular among homeowners because they are stronger, last longer and require much less maintenance than wooden decks. They can take on the chill of winter, the heat of summer and everything in between without the need for constant repair. However, even composite decks need to be cleaned at regular intervals. Mold and mildew are two big issues. Many homeowners notice black spots on their deck as they prepare their decks for the summer after a long winter. Though bleach can be used for cleaning, few people look forward to spending the day in protective clothes. Bleach is harmful to the skin and potentially to your deck. Until recently, there was not a good alternative. Thankfully, things have changed.

Resist Mist is a new way to clean composite decks safely and quickly. And the results can help keep your deck looking great for years. Unlike bleach, Resist Mist is not hazardous to your health like bleach. Although, as with all cleaning products, it is very important to keep children and pets away from the product and from the deck while it is wet. The Resist Mist cleaner, with Lift and Rinse Technology, penetrates the pores of your deck, lifts the mold, mildew, algae and oil stains and allows you to easily rinse them away. And it does not end at that. Resist Mist’s proprietary Micro Encapsulation Technology, stops biological growth from staining your composite deck and lasts for up to three years. The key is to use it correctly.

This blog is a summary of the cleaning techniques described in detail on Resist Mist’s official website. Read through them to clean your composite deck and make add less work and more Margaritas to your life:

Stage One

Start with Dilution
The ideal dilution ratio is 3:1. In more familiar terms, it means that you will pour a quart of Resist Mist into a gallon of water. Resist Mist offers a 1-gallon garden pump sprayer that makes this step super easy.

Spray the Diluted Mixture on Your Deck

Using your Resist Mist garden sprayer (or any quality garden pump sprayer) completely saturate your composite deck with the cleaning solution. Let the mixture sit on the deck for 10 minutes, but do not let it dry.

Scrub Your Deck with a Stiff Bristled Brush

Keep on scrubbing until the light foam is formed. Focus on stubborn stains. You may need to increase concentration (reduce dilution) if a stain proves to be particularly tough. We recommend the Resist Mist deck brush as it is harsh on stains but gentle on your deck. If you choose to use your own brush test a small area of your deck to ensure the brush does not damage your deck. If you have a pressure washer you can use it. Just make sure the pressure does not go above the recommended pressure of your deck. You can check with your deck manufacturer if you are unsure.

Rinse the Deck with Water
Use lots and lots of water. It will ensure complete rinsing and better results. We recommend taking the spray nozzle off of your hose and using large volumes of water.

Let the Deck Dry
Let the deck dry. It will take anywhere 30 minutes to several hours depending on the weather.

Stage Two

In stage two, you will help protect your deck from mold, mildew and algae stains for up to three years. And this step is even simpler than cleaning.

Dilute the Resist Mist Deck Treatment
Clean your garden pump sprayer completely with lots of water to ensure all of the cleaners is rinsed out. Add the Resist Mist Deck Treatment to the 1-gallon pump sprayer at a ratio of 1-quart Treatment to 3 Quarts water.

Saturate Your Deck with Resist Mist Deck Treatment
Make sure the deck is clean and dry before applying the treatment. It is important is to ensure the entire deck is sprayed evenly. Allow the deck to dry. After 24 hours place a drop of water in several places on your deck. If it the beads up, you have applied enough Resist Mist Treatment and applied it evenly. If not, apply the treatment a second time and allow to dry.

Stay Off the Deck for 24 Hours
Let the Resist Mist Treatment dry. We recommend waiting 24 hours to replace deck furniture and heavy foot traffic.
